Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association

Salon!

Led by west coast rep Michael Roth, the salons are meant to inspire energetic open-minded discussions about composing and sound design and encourage all members to keep on composing and creating their own unique new work. All suggestions and all methods of making work are welcome – notation, DAW-based, Max MSP, Ableton etc. As always, let Michael know if you have work of any kind you’d like to bring in.
Salon #22 – February 5 – LET’S TALK ABOUT BERNARD HERRMANN

an in depth analytical look at Bernard Herrmann, master composer, friend of Charles Ives who composed symphonies, operas, and some of the greatest film scores in history, from CITIZEN KANE to TWILIGHT ZONE to TAXI DRIVER and of course many classic Hitchcock scores (PSYCHO, THE BIRDS, VERTIGO, many others). All ideas welcome, contact Michael if there’s work of Herrmann’s you’d like to bring in and analyze.

Salon #23 – February 12 – CARLA BLEY

Central Region Rep Greg MacKender joins us for a special look at the great Carla Bley, uniquely American jazz artist, maverick composer, band leader – including a look at her experimental musical theatre piece “Escalator Over the Hill”

Salon #24 – February 25 – our guest will be Sarah Angliss joining us from the UK –
composer, sound designer, theraminist, robot maker and other things – for a talk about her work, including film and opera – and how our British colleagues – composers and sound designers – are creating work and looking towards the future (our talk just might include
a few thoughts about health care too)

Salon #25 – March 5 – all ideas welcome to help make the 25th Salon special
