1:30pm Session #2 – Panel Discussion: Panel Discussion: Full Of Noises
Understanding The Dramatic Function of Music & Sound in Shakespeare’s Plays

Moderator: John Gromada
Guest: Alex Sovronsky
In this session, we will explore how Shakespeare used music (both original and popular) and sound in his plays to better connect with his audiences. We will discuss how he uses music as text (quoting popular songs as part of dialogue in the context of regular scenes), music as a means of revving up the audience (utilizing popular songs to create a sing-along atmosphere), original music (to put the audience in the shoes of a character in the play, experiencing the music for the first time), and even SFX (the function of sound to tell an off-stage story or reinforce onstage action). By better understanding what Shakespeare was trying to accomplish for his audiences with his choices of music & sound, we can make more informed choices as we try to reinterpret Shakespeare for a modern audience.
