Annual Meeting: AI for Sound and Music Production

July 27, 2025 2:30pm PDT
Judy Bayley Theater

This session will explore the latest AI tools across speech, music, audio restoration, and sound effects — including voice cloning, AI-generated music, real-time audio de-noising, video-to-sound generation, and more. We’ll look at real-world applications using the tools and discuss the evolving landscape of AI-driven production – and also its limitations.

Bo Li is an audio professional whose life is defined by the emotional power of sound. His musical journey began at the age of nine when he first performed on the Erhu, and his passion led him to pursue a BFA in Recording Arts. He later received a full three-year Lillian Disney Scholarship from the California Institute of the Arts to pursue his MFA in Sound Design.

Bo served as sound supervisor for the animated short film “Unforgotten”, which won a Gold Medal at the Oscar Student Academy Awards, and other projects with Best Film Awards at Oscar-qualifying festivals. He has designed immersive 360-degree soundscapes for a THEA Award-winning theme park company at the world’s largest aquarium and collaborated with Soul Music Studio in Hong Kong on game advertisement projects for Tencent and Electronic Arts.
His personal sound and music projects have received numerous accolades, including the Gold Award Statue at the Denny Award for Acoustic Electronic Music (Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology), the Chunhui Cup Award in Audio Technology from China’s Ministry of Education, a Silver Award at the China Sound Academy Awards, Third Prize at the Berlin International Sound Design Competition, and Second Prize at the Beijing International Electronic Music Festival.
Bo has served as a distinguished judge for the Berlin Sound Design Competition and has beta-tested industry-standard audio software including Pro Tools and Vocoflex AI. As a Clinical Assistant Professor at Arizona State University, he built and managed Dolby Atmos studios and mentored students who later advanced to prestigious institutions such as the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins, SCAD, and Boston University with full scholarship.
He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. His research explores the integration of AI-generated sound in time-based media. His project Until We Meet Again, created in collaboration with Momo Wang (director at Illumination Entertainment) and sponsored by Kling AI, premiered at the China National Film Museum. His ongoing work in VR/XR, spatial audio, ambisonics, interactive media, experimental composition, and sonic arts invites dialogue at the intersection of humanity and engineering.
